Roulette HistoryThe history of Roulette is not well documented. Furthest back in Roulette's history is an even chance game with striking similarities, the English gambling game "Even and Odds" that also used a spinning wheel and ball. Dating from the mid 18th century it is believed to be the genesis form of the roulette wheel. Gamblers wagered even money bets on even, odd, red or black. A revolving wheel with the ball spun in the opposing direction and coming to rest in small wells that were matched upon a marked out betting table. Other historical influences contributing to the conception of Roulette are from games such as Ace of Hearts and RolyPoly of English origin and the French board game of the same name "Roulette". Roulette is known to have been played as early as 1796 in Paris. A novel by Jacques Lablee "La Roulette, oui le Jour" is the earliest evidence of it's past existence. The book is fairly descriptive the incorporation of two extra slots of roulette zero and double zero "...whence it derives its sole mathematical advantage." The 'Palais Royal' in Paris is described in the book as to where the roulette game took place. Later on the single zero roulette wheel was created by Louis Blanc and François Blanc of Homburg Germany in 1843 (not as is popularly believed by Blais Pascal) as a competitive move against other casinos, offering the player a better advantage by removing the double zero roulette number. Legend has it that François Blanc bargained with Beelzebub the devil himself to derive the secrets of the French roulette wheel. The legend is based on the summation of all the numbers on the roulette wheel from 1 through 36 is 666, which is known popularly as the mark of the beast. The original documented scriptures where this number actually originated from is 616, so the number of the beast is actually 616 not 666, so out goes that legend thank God. In the middle of the 19th century, the roulette game was becoming the greatest in popularity among the casino table games. Casinos in Monte Carlo were attracting the extremely rich paragons of Europe. Roulette became known over the world as the 'the game of Kings'. Roulette was the best casino game to play, exported all around the world. One exception to this was in the United States, where American roulette, the double zero wheel dominated. The mid 20th century and now in the 21st century casino gambling is infamous with Las Vegas and the American double zero roulette wheel. Europe and the rest of the world for the traditional French roulette wheel known as single zero roulette or European roulette that boasts a lower casino house edge as it has one less roulette number on the roulette wheel. |
